Good cold storage solutions start with one simple question: what is being stored? Bread needs a cool room. Fish needs a freezer. Vaccines need tight control and written records. The room is built around the product, never the other way round.
Every ColdTec engineer holds an F-Gas certificate and works across the UK. A fixed price is agreed in writing before any work starts, and it does not change. For the full range of work, see all refrigeration services.
Cold Storage Temperatures at a Glance
Every product has a safe temperature. This table shows the ranges used on every job.
| What is stored | Right temperature | Room type | How long it keeps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh fruit and vegetables | +2°C to +8°C | Chiller room | 3 to 10 days |
| Milk, cheese, yoghurt | +2°C to +5°C | Chiller room | 5 to 14 days |
| Fresh meat and poultry | 0°C to +2°C | Chiller room | 3 to 7 days |
| Fresh fish and shellfish | 0°C to +1°C | Chiller room with ice | 1 to 4 days |
| Cooked food (chilled fast) | +3°C or below | Blast chiller, then chiller room | 3 to 5 days |
| Frozen food | −18°C or below | Freezer room | 3 to 12 months |
| Ice cream | −20°C to −18°C | Freezer room | Up to 12 months |
| Vaccines and medicines | +2°C to +8°C | Pharmacy room with alarms | As the maker states |
Chilled Storage: +2°C to +8°C
Chiller rooms keep fresh food safe. Steady air and trapped moisture stop stock from drying out or sweating.
These cold storage solutions for chilled food use high-humidity airflow. Lettuce stays crisp, cheese stays dry on the surface and berries do not shrivel.
Each room gets strip curtains on the door, an alarm and a temperature log. The log can be printed and shown to any inspector.
Chiller rooms suit:
- Food factories and packing houses
- Farm shops and garden centres
- Florists
- Sandwich and salad makers
- Dairy sites

Frozen Storage: −18°C and Below
At −18°C bacteria stop working and food keeps for months. Freezer rooms are built with thick PIR panels and heated floors.
The heated floor matters more than most people expect. Without it, the ground under the room freezes, lifts and cracks the concrete. Heating mats go under the floor of every freezer room.
Busy freezer stores also get rapid-roll doors. A fast door keeps cold air in and warm, wet air out, which means less ice on the coils and fewer defrost cycles. For large sites, see warehouse cold room installation.

Blast Chilling and Blast Freezing
Hot food must cool fast. UK food safety guidance says cooked food should drop from +70°C to +3°C within 90 minutes. A normal chiller cannot do that. A blast chiller can.
Why fast cooling protects a business
Bacteria grow fastest between +8°C and +63°C. Food left in that band for hours becomes unsafe. A blast chiller moves food through the danger zone in minutes, which keeps stock usable, helps pass inspections and cuts waste.
Blast chillers are installed for butchers, ready-meal makers, school kitchens and hospital kitchens. Full specifications are on the commercial cold room installation page.

Pharmaceutical and Laboratory Cold Storage
Medicines need proof, not promises. Pharmacy cold rooms show the temperature at every minute of the day.
All work follows MHRA and Good Distribution Practice (GDP) rules. These rooms are installed for chemists, clinics, labs and hospitals.
Medicine rooms also need steady upkeep. Planned cold room maintenance and repair keeps sensors, alarms and records accurate.

Two Sensors
Two probes watch the room. If one fails, the other keeps watch, so the record is never lost.
Alarms That Find People
Text and email alerts go out the moment the temperature drifts, so action comes before stock spoils.
Printed Logs
A full temperature record can be printed for any day, week or month and handed to an inspector.
Battery Backup
A power cut does not stop the log. Backup power keeps sensors and alarms running.

What Cold Storage Costs to Run
Cheap cold storage solutions cost more later. Thin panels let heat in. A small plant runs all day and never rests. Both burn money every single day.
The better route is to size the plant to the real load, fit variable-speed compressors and electronic valves, and set the controller to match the stock. Most clients cut their energy bill in the first year. A quarterly maintenance contract keeps those savings in place.
Legal duties, handled
UK law requires records, leak tests and certified engineers for any refrigerant work. Every ColdTec service contract covers the tests and the paperwork. Read the official UK F-Gas guidance for users and operators. Any contractor can also be checked on the Refcom register.
Qualified crews handle every job. Meet the refrigeration engineers behind the work, or browse commercial refrigeration installation for shops, kitchens and cellars.

Cold Storage FAQs
Which cold storage solutions suit my business?
That depends on what is stored and how much. A farm shop needs one chiller room. A food factory needs a chiller, a freezer and a blast chiller. A free site visit shows exactly what is needed, and no room is ever sold bigger than the business can use.
How cold should a freezer room be?
−18°C or colder. At that temperature bacteria stop growing and frozen food keeps for months. Ice cream keeps best at −20°C.
How fast must cooked food cool down?
UK food safety guidance says from +70°C to +3°C within 90 minutes. A blast chiller does this safely. A normal chiller or fridge cannot, and leaving food on the side is unsafe.
Can a cold room fit in a small space?
Usually yes. Modular cold rooms are built panel by panel, so they fit tight corners and odd shapes. The space is measured first, and an honest answer is given on whether it will work.
How often does a cold room need a service?
Every three months. A quarterly service catches leaks, blocked coils, worn door seals and tired fan motors before stock spoils. See the cold room maintenance and repair contracts.
Is cold storage installed outside London?
Yes. Coverage includes the whole UK, Scotland and Wales. Crews run the length of the M1 and M25 every week. Start with cold room installation in Birmingham or London.
What happens if a cold room breaks down?
Call any hour. The 24/7 emergency refrigeration repair team carries the parts that fail most often, so most faults are fixed on the first visit.
